At Sandia Hearing Center, we hear all kinds of reasons people don’t get their hearing checked on an annual basis. Many of the things we hear are actually myth rather than fact, and believing them can be dangerous to your overall health and well being. But we get it – facing hearing loss can be scary. We want you to know that we can help empower you to take control over your hearing health so you can maintain an active lifestyle and strong relationships.
Here are three of the most common myths we hear at Sandia Hearing Center:
My Hearing Loss is normal for my age.
Isn’t this a strange way to look at things? But even well-meaning physicians tell this to their patients every day. It happens to be “normal” for overweight people to have high blood pressure or diabetes. That doesn’t mean they should not receive treatment for their problem.
I have one ear that’s a little troublesome, but the other one’s okay.
Nearly all patients with bilateral hearing loss believe they have one good ear. When one ear is slightly better than the other, we learn to favor that ear for the telephone, group conversation, and so forth. It can give the illusion that “the better ear” is normal, when really it’s compensating for hearing loss in the other. Most types of hearing loss affect both ears fairly equally, and about 90 percent of patients with bilateral hearing loss are in need of hearing aids for both ears.
Hearing loss is a simple sign of aging.
Because there are several types and causes of hearing loss, only 40% of people with hearing loss are older than 65 years old. There are more than 5 million people in the U.S. between the ages of 18 and 44 with hearing loss, and more than one million are of school age. Hearing loss affects all age groups.
